When parents are dealing with legal issues, kids can get anxious even tho parents do the best they can to shield their kids from their troubles. We expect it in Family law where home lives are changing and relationships between parents have been broken or strained.
But it's also important to remember that kids have big eyes and big ears and if you're going through a bankruptcy, fighting with a landlord, or dealing with a difficult insurance company that kids will pick up on your stress and can get anxious about it as well.
Here's a bit of help on how to talk to kids that are nervous or anxious to help them be calm.
Calm is often underappreciated for its importance, thanks to designer, actor, and hero of nerds everywhere Jen Page for pointing out this excellent article.

For most people who are looking for work, an employment contract is a non-negotiable instrument that they sign under duress as a result of needing a job. In those sorts of jobs, particularly in an at will state like Washington, the only legitimate purpose for a restrictive employment contract is to protect trade secrets. Anything else is a sign that the employer and their attorney is either unethical or haven't properly thought through the implications of what they are asking their employees to agree to under threat of not being hired. And arbitration agreements are a prime example of what not to put in your employment contract.
I don't like arbitration agreements, I think they're contrary to well established public policy regarding access to the courts and they are all too often used as a shield for employers involved in bad behavior. I believe they should be ruled unenforceable under the Washington State Constitution, but until that day comes (if it comes) I advise great caution in reliance on them and use of them.
Put as bluntly as I can, a business should be confident enough in their employment practices that they have no fear of a civil lawsuit. If you make your employees sign one of these things, you as a business owner should think long and hard about what you are saying about your own trustworthiness and fairness as an employer.
If you are asked to sign one of these, talk to a lawyer first. While we do not do employment law suits generally, Quackenbush Community Law now offers a 25 dollar contract review service for anyone with questions about a form employment contract they have been asked to sign as a precondition for being hired in Washington State. I will review the contract, explain the meaning of each term, and let you know if I think it's worth asking for changes. I will also inform you what rights you are signing away so you can make an informed decision about whether you believe you can trust your employer with that level of deference.
